When Does A Person Overstep Free Speech And Dive Into Hate Speech...

**Update** Forsakethetroops is gone!!!! **Update**

Recently I was talking to some friends and they pointed me to this website:

http://www.forsakethetroops.info (Notice I did not and will not provide a link. If you are interested in seeing one of the single most vile things on the web you will have to cut and paste. This site is not for the easily upset).

Forsake The Troops is a horrible website centered around hate for our military and hate for its members.

These are just a few of the "Headlines" from the "Military Newsroom" at Forsake The Troops.info:

This is beyond disgusting! In Ohio, you can get out of a contract by being military! NEVER trust a soldier-- NEVER!

Military scumbag families get even more handouts on our dime! SICK!

A scumbag in Tennessee ditches his family-- he even had an out-- and the military approves!

Notice I didn't provide links? I feel bad enough providing the URL for this horrible site. However, if you go to the site and find these "Headlines" you will soon notice that these are all good stories.

One of the things this site owner seems to have a problem with is how "grossly overpaid" the military is. If you take the time to break down some of the specialties you will see just how inaccurate this statement is. Even without considering area of expertise this statement is just ludicrous. He points out that an E-1 makes almost $1300 per month. Lets start with that. $1,300 per month x 12 months = $15,600.00. Remember that is before taxes. If that E-1 is an unwed troop without any children he gets the accommodations of a prisoner. On average a single 10'x10' dorm room with a bathroom that is joined/shared with the next room. In many cases this dorm room is shared with one or more roommates. These rooms would be laughed off my most college kids. So now we have an 18 YO kid who shares a prison cell with another person and makes thousands below the poverty line. All the while he has to stay fit, stay trained and be ready to leave what little he owns and the comfort of American soil for some nasty location on the other side of the earth.

Now lets look at specialties. Take a Military Policeman for example. What police department starts its new officers at $15,600 per year? If they did they wouldn't have a police force. How about a Doctor? Say a 1st Lieutenant, they get 2,343.60 per month starting off. That's just over $28,000 per year! How many Dr.'s do you know of who work for under $30,000 per year? Here is another example a little closer to home. A firearms instructor here in the local area gets paid between $75 and $100 per person for firearms certification. He can have classes as large as 30 people. A full class/one day he makes $3,000. That is more than my base pay for an entire month after ten years of service.

Moving away from his primary argument I'd like to focus on the hatred. I don't know what would motivate an American to say these horrible things about the troops. To speak of America's heroes in this way is just as dirty as any other hate based organization such as the KKK, The Aryan Nation, Hammerskins, Black Panthers etc.

This site is nothing but pure hate and filth. And while I believe the site owner has every right to free speech I also think his host has every right to terminate his site. People like this always choose false names and hide behind anonymous email addresses. Talk is huge, but action is non-existent. I know you will never find the site owner for Forsakethetroops.info standing outside a military installation spewing this filth. It's easy for him to hide behind a web page and talk down about America's heroes.

I am a firm believer in free speech, but this is just Hate. At what point does hate speech become a hate crime? I am not sure what our military did to upset these people. Perhaps they were dishonorably discharged or not even accepted for service. Maybe the fact that we have a military that fights for his/her rights to spew this filth makes these people feel obligated to do so. I don’t know. I don’t know how men and woman who spend YEARS away from their families can be grossly overpaid. I don’t understand how heroes who sacrifice so much can be overpaid or “scumbags”. I don’t understand how people who are willing to give up everything to fight for those who can’t and see death and destruction around them can be “overpaid”.

If you've looked at Forsakethetroops.info and you are appalled by what you have seen, let the web host know.

You can contact the web host for this horrendous site with the information below:

Michael Vogel
Silent Mike Internet Services
130 Westmoreland Avenue
Suite #140
Syracuse, New York 13203
1-315-424-3785
Email: operations@silent-mike.info

Let him know what you think of the site he hosts. Let the site owner know how far off he really is.

If you bounce around the sphere you will see others that have commented on this horrible site. For example:

Eric who provided me most of the initial information.

Delftsman at Emigre offers his two cents.

Yeah, Right, Whatever

Just a Girl

Conservative Friends

Note I will add other links as I find them.

Just in case these people who comprise the organization called Forsake The Troops visit my humble blog, pay notice that I didn't call you scumbags as you did me.

Also noteworthy (if only in humor):

I am happy to say that in a Google Fight I kicked the shit out of Forsake The Troops, their piss poor 101 links compared to my nearly 40,000!

I am just appalled and stunned. It's one thing to not like the military. It's another to be so filled with contempt and hate for the military like whoever runs this site is.

Makes me sick to my stomach.

Our brave military: Protecting our rights to free speech...as long as we don't actually use it too often, or in a way they don't like. Pressuring a web host to pull a site because you don't agree with it is pretty weak. Although I'm sure the web hosting company won't bow to pressures from people who's idea of freedom is gagging people they disagree with.

Ah, Yes - Free speech means allowing gangsters and thugs on the web to continue making these kind of a$$hole statements. Sadly, he does have free speech, provided by the very service people he vilifies. I am sickened at the treatment given to military members on that site.

Protest the government if you dislike the military mission, but don't attack the folks who are sacrificing their freedom and possibly lives for you.

SlagleRock - Ugly as this is, thank you for reminding us that there are a lot of sick people in the world. And Thank You and your family for your service - I appreciate it immensely!

Special Needs,

Thank you for once again visiting my site and reminding both me and my readers just how ignorant and ungrateful some people really are.

Without people like you with your beliefs there would be no dictatorships on this planet. Without people like you we would have no need for a military and I wouldn't have my "grossly overpaid" job. Which of course is paid for by your hard earned tax dollars, as if we (military) don't pay taxes.

I took a look at your silly little site today (for only the 2nd time since Mamamontezz was nice enought to set it up for you) and noticed that no one has commented on it since she stood it up. All of the comments are from either the woman nice enough to give you a place to scream for attention or those of us who support her.

You know it would probably be easier if you just wheeled yourself out to a street corner with a sign that says "Will hate everything American for food."

Do us all a favor and just stay away from here. It sickens me more and more everytime I read something you have said. For a brief moment, in the beginning I thought that maybe just maybe there was a human being somewhere inside your messed up head, now I know that is simply not possible.

Don't worry, I won't ban you because I do believe in free speech, just like I said in my post however when that speech incites violence it has gone to far. I promise you if any of the lunatics from Forsakethetroops.info ever publicly stated any of their rhetoric near a military installation it would be ugly.

I know that what I do is just and necessary, and I will continue to do so even if it means the ignorant can continue to hate openly.

Have a nice day.

This can't be real. They're complaining about people who live off of less than 20k a year. How can they think that is overpaid?

Posted by: Wesley Womack at February 19, 2005 03:31 PM

With all due respect, you are asking your readers to go look at this website just by mentioning the name and providing partial URI to it. This moron is a pro-hacker, and now has every bit of personal information available about every visitor who has been there. Please be sure to clear your cache and run a thorough virus scan if you've been to that site.

For a complete jerk, he's getting exactly what he wants from every Conservative or Patriotic visitor. Publicity. Positive or negative, the guy wants to be a household name, and Con's everywhere are helping him achieve his goal. :(

Posted by: Leanne at February 19, 2005 05:48 PM

Thanks Leanne, I did feel bad in providing a URL, but people do need to be aware of the vile filth that is out there. I did not make it a hyperlink because I didn't want his site to receive its traffic from the Slaughterhouse.

Thanks again

Dude, I'm just joking. You know, ha ha? I suspect the "Don't support the troops" guy is too. Besides, his views really don't seem like hate speech at all. He just thinks guys in the military make too much money. Stupid? Obviously. But not hate speech. If he were calling for people to be murdered or buildings to be bombed, you might have a point. But as it is, you're all in a twist over essentially nothing.

And calling for people to email his webhost in the hopes they'll pull his site is weak. You can disagree with someone all you like, but taking action to take away the platform upon which he speaks is just screwed up.

Posted by: Special Needs at February 20, 2005 11:35 AM

Leanne, trust me. This dork is no pro hacker

Dude, I'm just joking. You know, ha ha?

I appreciate humor in fact more than most.

However, this is not funny:

Our brave military: Protecting our rights to free speech...as long as we don't actually use it too often, or in a way they don't like.

And as far as pressuring them to remove it is concerned that is merely in the name of decency. Just because we are allowed to do something doesn't mean we should or need too. I could start a site about how all people with special needs are useless unproductive members of society that suckle off of Uncle Sams tit, but I would never do that.

A.) I don't believe it

B.) Just because the freedom of speech would allow me to start such a site doesn't mean I should or need to. I am far to decent of a person to ever do such a hate filled thing.

Posted by: SlagleRock at February 20, 2005 06:55 PM

You use free speech your way, other people use it their way. That's why it's free. I cringe when people of any political persuasion start talking about banning ideas, no matter how hateful/disagreeable I may find them. The whole concept of "hate speech" is pretty ridiculous. Hate is protected, and often useful.

Posted by: Special Needs at February 20, 2005 08:39 PM

I too, "cringe when people of any political persuasion start talking about banning ideas". I never suggested banning them. I merely suggested letting his host know how people feel if they disagree with Forsakethetroops.

There are more suitable ways to let out ones ideas. Hate hidden behind a mask of humor is not one of them. I am a firm believer in freedom of speech, but what happens when someone like the people at Forsake The Troops says the wrong thing to the wrong person and then a crime is committed?

Ever heard the terms, Provoking speech and gestures? In some states if you flip off a cop he can arrest you. Or if you get punched in the nose for calling a guys wife a bitch you will both likely be charged, you for provoking and the person that struck you for assault.

Accountability is what it all boils down to. I think it is just as dastardly to call members of the military "Scumbags" as it is to call someone of lesser intelligence "Retard" or perhaps a person of African decent a "Ni**er". Do you understand my point? There are right ways and wrong ways to conduct ourselves as civil human beings.

Posted by: SlagleRock at February 20, 2005 10:46 PM

A person who says: "Our troops are retarded swine who deserve to die" isn't responsible for the actions of a person who murders a member of the military.

It's different from yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.

Hate hidden behind a mask of humor is a very suitable way to express oneself, I think. Look at Hunter Thompson, or Rush Limbaugh--two hateful, funny guys.

Posted by: Special Needs at February 21, 2005 09:25 AM

It is extremely easy to sit safe and secure at your keyboard and spew bullshit. Its another thing to make those same statements to the very people you hate. If in fact, forsake the troops, is using irony/humor to vent, perhaps he/she would be brave enough to bring the act on the road. You know, put themselves out there to be vilified publicly. As a card carrying, overpaid “scumbag” I would just like to say fuck you to all you cowardly bastards who don’t appreciate the freedom you have, given to you I might add, by the very people you hate. God Bless America, our troops, President Bush, and a FREE IRAQ!!!!

Posted by: Theresa at February 21, 2005 10:15 AM
A person who says, "Our troops are retarded swine who deserve to die" isn't responsible for the actions of a person who murders a member of the military.

I agree if a single person makes a single statement and some other moron acts on it ultimately that person isn't responsible.

However, was Hitler responsible when he said he hated the jews? Was he responsible for the fact that millions were slaughtered because of his mere words?

Hate hidden behind a mask of humor is a very suitable way to express oneself, I think.

Here you are way off the mark. Hate is hate whether it is hidden or out in the open. Hate is wrong. If a person hates something as American as our military then perhaps they should move to a nation that doesn't have one.

Hate is wrong, standing for something that makes sense is the right thing to do, but to openly hate the people who make it all possible is assinine.

It is not funny to say that you hate someone. You need to follow the link to conservative friends (in the post) and read about just how far the hate of this person goes.

I am sure if you read far enough you will see that his near Nazi views probably call for the destruction of all "non-productive" members of society. Is it right to say that we should kill all people with disabilities? They aren't productive members of society. They have nothing to offer the greater well being. They suck money from tax payers. Maybe we should rid our nation of the weakness that is those people with Special Needs??? ABSOLUTELY NOT! That is wrong and not how I feel, but what if people did feel that way?

DO YOU SEE HOW NASTY HATE REALLY IS?

I am sorry but there is nothing you can say to me that makes it openly OK to hate people in this fashion. Hitler was wrong, the Neo-Nazi's are wrong, Forsakethetroops is wrong, the KKK is wrong, the Black Panthers are wrong and so is any other organization that would discrimintate against anyone because of their differences.

Plain and simple. We have no need for organizations like these that breed only hate and ultimately violence.

It is a difficult quagmire that we have in this country. We guard freedom of speech (which I value dearly) and yet because of that freedom we often find ourselves confronting the demons of our own nation.

Sorry, S/N but there is no twist or spin that can be put on hate to make it acceptable.

...but it's okay to hate islamic fundamentalists?

Only if said "fundamentalist" flew an airplane into a building full of innocent civilians, or murdered an innocent civilian simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Any true Muslim would tell you that these terrorists are not Muslims and do not practice Islam as Allah would have wanted or Muhammed would have taught.

Nice try S/N.

It was all a HOAX people. Put on by White Sup. Mike Crook to get a rise out of people. Do a search and you'll see that you all got worked up by someone that was trying to prove a point.--->we all want and respect free speech UNTIL it is speech we don't agree with. Then we will try and stop it.

His little 'experiment' worked and you all that wanted and worked to get the site removed and sent hate messages etc proved his point.

One thing y'all should know is that Micheal Vogel is Micheal Crook ( the owner of this viotale website) aka Micheal Delaney. One man has 3 different last names floating around the internet. Definitely makes me wonder what is he trying to hide.
Im so proud of our troops :D

I am an ARMY WIFE stationed about 60 miles from this idiot. I believe he his seriously some type of WANNA BE TERRORIST. He was on one of our local radio stations and he was pathetic. He was to chicken to come in person. Anyway....when I visited his site I DID INFACT get lots of virus's on my computer. So watch out. Also, I found a profile of him, and the way I understood it was that he WAS in the military. He probably didn't make it thru boot camp. He's just jeolous, because he had the opportunity and messed it up. Ignore him, he's a poor excuse for a human being. I LOVE AND SUPPORT MY HUSBAND AND THE REST OF THE TROOPS..........

Posted by: Kim at May 6, 2005 09:07 AM

I tried to contact the host. I called first and the number has been cut off. Then I tried to Email them and they are no longer accepting mail. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Cowards! I really wanted to thank them all. My husband is a Army recruiter and said all the talk about great benafits and high pay will really help him with his mission of manning the best military in the world.

Posted by: Dana at May 24, 2005 08:49 AM

My brother is currently in Iraq with the 1-5 Marines. My sister is in the Air Force. My husband is in the Army. My father is retired Air Force, and my mother served in the Air Force Reserves from 1980 to 1982. Yes, we are a military family. And we are proud to be one.

I, obviously, disagree with this guy whole heartedly. I know exactly how much each member of the service, at different ranks, with different years of service, make. I KNOW FOR A FACT, that this guy would never sacrifice for his country at that kind of pay. Lots of people wouldn't. That's why we are currently having such a hard time recruiting (p.s. we're stuck on recruiting duty right now). Well, pay is one of the recruiting problems anyway.

I keep thinking back to WWII. How different we would be had our men, and women, not fought for us. And the conditions for the military were worse back then. Pay? Ha. They really did make next to nothing.

He can say whatever he wants to. That is his right. A right provided by my family members, your family members, and generations back of our family members. I'm sure that even in his family, there is a relative from the Rev War, War of 1812, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, or whatnot, who sacrificed on his behalf. Everyday Americans, not just military, fight for his right to say what he wants.

Do I disagree with him? Yes. But would I change his ability to state his opinion? No. If I did, what would my brother be fighting for.

We, the family members, make our sacrifices so that that...man...can say this. Even against us. I take it very personally, but I refuse to make my family's service dishonorable and worth nothing by requesting he give up one of the many rights my brother, sister, husband, father & mother have provided to him.

I'm sad for America on a whole, that such a person exists. Sometimes it seems as if the American spirit of yesterday has gone, and will never return.

Posted by: Danica Love at June 9, 2005 11:34 AM

I am so disgusted that I believe I could be sick. I heard about the website on fox news some months back but didn't think about it. Then my husband, an Air Force member, came home and told me about the interview on Hannity and Colmes. I watched and was in tears.
I could only think... how could some deranged person out there think that? My family is totally against war... however they support my husband.
I wish I could show this "crook", or whatever his name is, my husband's pay. He supports himself and me and our daughter on less than $2000 a month. He has been in for 4 years. Not to mention that we have another child on the way. After bills and groceries, we are lucky to put gas in the car.
It strikes me funny to know we are so RICH... and the sad thing is that a lot of people out there think we have it made. Even some of our family. Well this is how made we have it...
My husband will deploy at the beginning of the year.. when our baby is due. Maybe he will be here for the birth, maybe not. He will not even know our child.
He does this because it is what he believes in and he is supporting this loser's right to say all this stuff. I don't think what the guy said should be on tv or the internet... but it reminds me why I support my husband, why he loves what he does, and why for months he is away from us.
"Crook" that!
