What Do You Think About This?

**NOTE** I Believe this to be fake. Or at least not something coming from the AF.

All right everyone, opinion time. I know I have many military readers, and also many readers who are military brats.

How many of you know/remember what the Security Police badge looks like?

Here is a reminder:

Old Badge.bmp

In 1997 there was a major realignment of our careerfield and our title was changed once again. We went from Military Police (under the Army) to Air Police in the early years of the Air Force to Security Police and in October 1997 we became Security Forces. Throughout all of those years one constant was the badge. The changes that were made were subtle. Now, I am hearing that a new badge has been proposed and found a link that claims this is the new badge.

What do you think of this?

I don't know what to think. Part of me says leave it alone. Part of me says, maybe it will be more recognizable as a Law Enforcement badge.

If anyone has any legitimate information on this badge or it being a proposal, please leave me a link or let me know in the comments.

Thanks

There they go again... just when
you get used to something, they
go and change things around again...
I'm thinking the only tradition left is
the need to switch thing up every 5 or 6 years...

Hmmm... sounds like a good subjuct to rant about
on my small space on blogdrive...

Is this something cooked up by some megalomaniac passed over for promotion to make a name for himself? At least that's not a UN emblem in the center of the shield.

The proposed badge is not that bad looking really,
it looks like is was designed to look like the
badges from the Police Forces of some of the
Major Cities... ( well... as far at this Medical
Support guy sees it.)

OT: I just got a great idea... plase a UN emblem
on the Democrats Donk. That will show where their
true loyalties are...

In my opinion, this new badge is actually pretty good looking.I have to agree with Ken.It does resemble the shield of some major cities forces.

Even though it is good looking I hope they don't switch to it.I started wearing the original badge, quite proudly I might add, thirty four years ago.It had a great feel to it then and I bet it still does today.A hell of a lot of good troops wore that badge all over the world.

As SlagleRock mentioned, throughout the years, the one common thread shared by all Air Force police officers was the badge. The badge signified to all that the troop wearing it was the highest authority on the base when on duty.

I don't mean to sound unpatriotic but when I wore that badge, serving the Air Force and the country that I love so dearly,I held it in a regard almost as high as I do Old Glory.

I believe that changing the design would be a disservice to all those that have worn it so proudly.I think that they would be depriving those yet to serve as an Air Force police officer of their proper heritage.

Last but not least "It ain't broke, so don't try to fix it".

The new badge does in indeed look like the one I wore as a Sgt. in my police department. I also agree with Papa, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

You might want to go and bend the ear of Mike over here. (Yeah, it's a cigar site, but he used to run DGCI, and has not only spent some time in the AF but is a collecter of badges as well.) He might be able to shead some light on the subject of send you to someone who can.

My initial thought is it's probably a fake, although some of the armed services badges, most notably Navy and Marine Corps CID, do resemble civilian police badges. I'll check around and see if I can find anything out.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate it!

After further research, I'm finding that many AF Security Forces squadrons are contracting out services such as Gate Guards due to personnel shortages from deployments to Iraq.

There's a real possibility that the Air Force may be issuing this badge to contract augmentees.

However, I remain convinced that it is NOT a badge used by military personnel.

This badge was a prototype made by a southern CA badge company at the request of an officer at Los Angeles AFB, CA. The officer submitted the design to AF as the new style badge. Unknown what the current status of the suggestion is. Having been a SP for over 20 years I think the new style should be adopted. It combines the traditional AP/SP badge with a more identifable "Police" insignia. When I first entered the AF in the 70's I thought the badge looked like a firemans badge, still does! Peacekeepers All!
