« June 2004 | Main | August 2004 » July 31, 2004John Kerry's Acceptance SpeechI'm John Kerry, and I'm reporting for duty. Oh sure, now he is reporting for duty. Now this line and a cheesy salute is supposed to make everyone forget that he once cheated his way to three purple hearts so he could leave Vietnam after only 4 months. We are here tonight because we love our country. We're proud of what America is and what it can become. My fellow Americans, we're here tonight united in one purpose: to make America stronger at home and respected in the world. Cliché A great American novelist wrote that you can't go home again. He could not have imagined this evening. Tonight, I am home ... home where my public life began and those who made it possible live; home where our nation's history was written in blood, idealism and hope; home where my parents showed me the values of family, faith and country. Thank you, all of you, for a welcome home I will never forget. I wish my parents could share this moment. They went to their rest in the last few years. But their example, their inspiration, their gift of open eyes – open eyes and open mind and endless heart and world that doesn't have an end are bigger and more lasting than any words at all. So what he is saying here is we should hold Boston accountable for the monster that is John Kerry since that is where he was brought up and learned his "values" I was born, as some of you saw in the film, in Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado when my dad was a pilot in World War two. Now, I am not one to read into things, but guess which wing of the hospital the maternity ward was in? I'm not kidding. I was born in the West Wing. Give me a break, "the West Wing". Oh surely that means he was born to wreck the United States by getting elected to the office of the President. My mother was the rock of our family, as so many mothers are. She stayed up late to help me with my homework. She sat by my bed when I was sick. She answered the questions of a child who, like all children, found the world full of wonders and mysteries. She was my den mother when I was a Cub Scout, and she was so proud of her 50-year pin as a Girl Scout leader. She gave me her passion for the environment. She taught me to see trees as the cathedrals of nature. And by the power of her example, she showed me that we can and must complete the march toward full equality for all women in the United States of America. Right up until the "she showed me that we can and must complete the march toward full equality for all women " part I thought the man had a heart and was giving his mother credit. Turns out he was just leading up to a dig for the feminist vote. My dad did the things that a boy remembers. He gave me my first model airplane, my first baseball mitt, my first bicycle. He also taught me that we are here for something bigger than ourselves. He lived out the responsibilities and the sacrifices of the greatest generation to whom we owe so much. And when I was a young man, he was in the State Department, stationed in Berlin when it and the world were divided between democracy and communism. I have unforgettable memories of being a kid mesmerized by the British, French and American troops, each of them guarding their own part of the city, and Russians standing guard on that stark line separating East from West. On one occasion, I rode my bike into Soviet East Berlin, and when I proudly told my dad, he promptly grounded me. But what I learned has stayed with me for a lifetime. I saw how different life was on different sides of the same city. I saw the fear in the eyes of people who were not free. I saw the gratitude of people toward the United States for all that we had done. I felt goose bumps as I got off a military train and heard the Army band strike up Stars and Stripes Forever. I learned what it meant to be America at our best. I learned the pride of our freedom. And I am determined now to restore that pride to all who look to America. Mine were Greatest Generation parents. And as I thank them, we all join together to thank a whole generation for making America strong, for winning World War 2, winning the Cold War and for the great gift of service which brought America 50 years of peace and prosperity. He learned so many good lessons and then forgot them. He made his case for patriotism, but denounces it every time he slanders the president. He shows that he has the tools to lead (good upbringing) but has no idea how to use them or on what parts of the freedom machine they apply. My parents inspired me to serve, and when I was in high school, a junior, John Kennedy called my generation to service. It was the beginning of a great journey, a time to march for civil rights, for voting rights, for the environment, for women, for peace. We believed we could change the world. And you know what? We did. But we're not finished. The journey isn't complete; the march isn't over; the promise isn't perfected. Tonight, we're setting out again. And together, we're going to write the next great chapter of America's story. So what he's saying is that he wants to protest and fight the system instead of working to improve it. There is no doubt that the entire effort in Iraq and Afghanistan will go straight to shit if Waffles gets elected. We have it in our power to change the world, but only if we're true to our ideals. And that starts by telling the truth to the American people. As president, that is my first pledge to you tonight: as president, I will restore trust and credibility to the White House. He wants to talk about honesty. I heard on the news last night that 73% of Americans polled think that the President is an honest man and stays true to his word. Asked the same question of Kerry 76% of those polled said that Kerry says whatever the moment calls for and has no idea what his own ideas/values are. I ask you, I ask you to judge me by my record. As a young prosecutor, I fought for victims' rights and made prosecuting violence against women a priority. When I came to the Senate, I broke with many in my own party to vote for a balanced budget, because I thought it was the right thing to do. I fought to put 100,000 police officers on the streets of America. And then I reached out across the aisle with John McCain to work to find the truth about our POWs and missing in action and to finally make peace in Vietnam. I will be a commander in chief who will never mislead us into war. I will have a vice president who will not conduct secret meetings with polluters to rewrite our environmental laws. I will have a secretary of defense who will listen to the best advice of the military leaders. And I will appoint an attorney general who will uphold the Constitution of the United States. Where to start on this one? Ok first he wants to pat himself on the back for working with John McCain (a true war hero) the same McCain who now publicly speaks out against John Kerry and everything that he stands for today (because tomorrow it will change). Next a "President who will never mislead us into war". No but he will be a president who misled his way out of one. "I will have a vice president who will not conduct secret meetings with polluters to rewrite our environmental laws." A Vice president who holds secret meetings? Why in the world would the man who holds the second highest office in our country hold secret meetings? Come on John you can do better than that. "I will have a secretary of defense who will listen to the best advice of the military leaders." I think he is implying that Americans are actually dumb enough to believe that Rumsfeld can completely control the military. It doesn't work that way. While the military may answer to Rumsfeld he is not all powerful. We have a system of checks and balances in all sectors of government. My fellow Americans, this is the most important election of our lifetime. The stakes are high. We are a nation at war: a global war on terror against an enemy unlike we've ever known before. And here at home, wages are falling, health-care costs are rising, and our great middle class is shrinking. People are working weekends - two jobs, three jobs - and they're still not getting ahead. We're told that outsourcing jobs is good for America. We're told that jobs that pay $9000 less than the jobs that have been lost is the best that we can do. They say this is the best economy that we've ever had. And they say anyone who thinks otherwise is a pessimist. Well, here is our answer: There is nothing more pessimistic than saying that America can't do better. We can do better, and we will. We're the optimists. For us, this is a country of the future. We're the can-do people. I do agree that this is a very important election. The dumb-O-Craps have nominated their most liberal candidates in history. If Waffles gets elected most of the morals and values Americans hold dear will be challenged. When you promise a world without order that is what you have to deliver once elected. And let's not forget what we did in the 1990s: we balanced the budget. We paid down the debt. We created 23 million new jobs. We lifted millions out of poverty. And we lifted the standard of living for the middle class. We just need to believe in ourselves and we can do it again. As for his attempt to plug the 90's as "what we did". Look at how many laws Waffles introduced and fought to pass and you will see he is clearly not in the "we" category. Kerry is the first Senator I have seen that has been able to sit on the fence and do little to nothing for so long. Is that what kind of president you want? So tonight, in the city where America's freedom began, only a few blocks from where the sons and daughters of liberty gave birth to our nation, here tonight, on behalf of a new birth of freedom, on behalf of the middle class who deserve a champion, and those struggling to join it who deserve a fair shot, for the brave men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day and the families who pray for their return, for all those who believe our best days are ahead of us, for all of you, with great faith in the American people, I accept your nomination for president of the United States. First, since he brought it up, "in the city where America's freedom began", the founding fathers are likely rolling in their graves. He keeps mentioning the middle class, yet he is the wealthiest senator in history. How can he relate to a segment of society that he has long been above? He is married to the Heinz Corporation. All he knows is high society. If "our best days are ahead of us" clearly they do not include John F. Kerry as president. If you are not a voter, shame on you. If you haven't voted in the past, step up, register and prevent the atrocity of a John Kerry white house. SlagleRock Out! She wrote this today and emailed it to me. She asked that I post it on her site for her, ha ha I have the power. Seriously though, if you want to get slappy drunk this is the way to do it! It's time to announce the rules for the "John Kerry Acceptance Speech Drinking Game!" To play the game, you need a few things: a shot glass, a television, access to the Loyal Citizens chatroom (accessible via the Rottie), and a designated sober person for either making sure you don't miss a reference during the game or the toilet afterward. Originally, I had thought it would be like most drinking games, in that the object was to do shots. However, indications are that shots might not be a good idea, because we'd have VRWC's all over the country in hospitals tonight with alcohol poisoning. Maybe 2oz beer shots? Heck, even Pepsi would good,if it were all you had. Cues for taking your beershot: 1. Every time he says "when I served in Viet Nam." 2. Every time he says "Purple Heart." 3. Every time he says "Fair Share." 4. Every time he says "During my career." 5. Anytime he attempts a joke or takes a stab at humor, for which humor will probably file charges for attempted murder. 6. Every time he makes a reference to "Corporate Welfare" or "tax cuts for the rich." 7. Every time he says "I know what it's like..." 8. Every time he makes a reference to a Kennedy, dead or alive. See what I mean about not doing actual shots? People could die, and we need all your votes in November. And unlike the Dims, we don't vote from the grave. Great work, Mama, Thanks SlagleRock Out! This is one of those moments that make me wonder if perhaps the blogosphere has brought this one to the mainstream media. What exactly is this? The media says it is John Kerry in a "clean suit" at a Nasa facility (of course they said that just before his campaign manager tried to claim that it was a fake.) I think it is Kerry in a body condomn, or perhaps he was trying out for the role of the "blue sperm" in Woody Allens next movie. Then we have this great picture from BlogsForBush: CNN credits this pic as a great piece of editing. I think this is the real photo before the bunny ears were removed. The Kerry Campaign clearly didn't want the American public to know that their candidate sleeps in Bunny Pajamas. What Matt at BlogsForBush is asking, "is this Kerry's Dukakis moment?" Posted by SlagleRock at 08:15 PM | Comments (4) Holy Land Foundation (Terrorist Funding?)Oh no, imagine that. A Muslim charity within the US is charged with funneling money to Hamas among other terrorist organizations. The investigation into the Holy Land Foundation has been extensive. Do a search of the web and you will find references to this organization that go back many years for example here is one from the ADL. In 1989 in an IAP and HLF sponsored event, a masked man took the stage to praise Hamas, describing the 'oceans of blood' it would bring on the Israelis. He also thanked the two organizations, singling them for being early allies of Hamas. Other speakers praised Hamas, and a Hamas banner draped the table from which they spoke. According to The Dallas Morning News, HLF's leaders claimed that sharing the stage with Hamas activists is not equal to supporting it. Here is another: In 1997, Israel banned the Jerusalem-based Holy Land Foundation as a Hamas front-group. That year, Israel raided the group's headquarters and seized documents that allegedly linked the Jerusalem office with the HLF in the U.S. Israel security also arrested the Jerusalem Holy Land Foundation's director, Mohammed Othman (a.k.a. Rahman Anati), for purportedly distributing monthly stipends to families of Hamas suicide bombers. According to the Israeli authorities most of the money Othman dispensed was raised by the HLF operation in Texas. HLF representatives do not deny the fact that it gives money to the orphans and widows of Hamas activists but claim that the money is given on the basis of need and not the political affiliation of the deceased. This morning it was announced that the HLF was indicted for their links to terrorism. Take a look at CNN.com for the latest. Click continue reading for the full story from CNN. Now, my take on it. If this organization is in fact funding terrorism, I say we take all parties involved and cage them with swine. Let them spend the rest of their lives caged with pigs in conditions as inhumane as possibly achievable. In our politically correct world we often get so caught up in being "right" or "fair" that we forget the value of fear. If terrorists, within the United States are shown the worst possible scenario of punishment for their actions they just might think twice before supporting terror both abroad and in the US. We need to pull no punches and throw PC to the wind and deal with these evil people in a manner that will shake their brethren to the core. SlagleRock Out! For additional information take a look at the ADL and CNN U.S. authorities planned to announce Tuesday charges against a Texas-based Muslim charity and seven individuals on charges related to financing terrorism, law enforcement sources said. U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft planned to announce at a news conference later Tuesday the details of the indictment against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development and the seven individuals. Officials said the indictments by a Dallas, Texas, grand jury will name as defendants figures associated with the charity, which was virtually shut down by federal authorities who seized the organization's assets two years ago. According to The Associated Press, the indictment includes a count or counts of conspiracy, providing support to an international terrorist organization, conspiracy to deal in the property of a terrorist, and dealing in the property of a specially designated terrorist. The indictment also alleges money-laundering, conspiracy to impede an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service and filing false tax returns, the AP reported. Among the men charged were Shukri Abu Baker, the foundation's former chief executive, according to the AP. Federal authorities said five of the seven indicted persons were arrested early Tuesday in Texas, New Jersey, and California. The two others are believed to be overseas, but authorities declined to be more specific. Authorities have accused Holy Land Foundation of operating as a front for Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist organization that the United States and Israel call an international terrorist organization. The group operates an extensive social services network in the Palestinian territories. Within weeks after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, an FBI investigation identified Holy Land Foundation as the source of financial support for Hamas, and for family members of suicide bombers. The government then froze the charity's assets, and courts have upheld the action. On Monday, however, lawyers for Holy Land sent a formal complaint against the FBI to the Justice Department inspector general demanding an investigation into the FBI for distorting facts and falsifying evidence. A spokesman for the inspector general Tuesday confirmed receipt of correspondence from the Holy Land Foundation, but declined comment. Poor, poor France, I mean think about it... Not only has the US had to bail them out of two world wars and billions in debt and reconstruction costs but also an American has bested them at their own race, for the 6th time (and to be honest one of the very few things that Americans track when it comes to France). Here are Lance's highlights from his unprecedented 6 Tour de France wins. Lance Armstrong's highlights from six Tour wins: 1999 `Winning my first yellow jersey.' Armstrong, declared cancer-free in 1997, wins his first Tour de France 2 ½ years later. He won the prologue, two time trials and the ninth stage. 2000 `Winning the Hautacam stage. That was the year everybody said I couldn't do it.' Tour winners Jan Ullrich and Marco Pantani were back, and favorites, after sitting out in 1999. On the day of the Pyrenees stage, Armstrong started in 16th place, but by the end of the climb he was first. 2001 `I remember L'Alpe d'Huez.' Early in the 21-switchback, 9.6-mile climb, Armstrong passed Ullrich like he was standing still and gave his rival the famous look. 2002 `No highlights. That's just my honest answer.' He became the fifth man to win four Tours, joining Bernard Hinault, Eddie Merckx, Miguel Indurain and Jacques Anquetil. 2003 `Luz Ardiden.' Armstrong had a bad crash before the Tour, was ill at the start, was badly dehydrated in the time trial, barely averted a crash when Joseba Beloki wiped out in front of him. Then, while breaking away on a climb up the Luz Ardiden, his handlebars caught in the strap of a fan's bag, which threw him to the ground. The pack waited for Armstrong to get up after Tyler Hamilton reminded them of proper Tour etiquette. Armstrong went on the win the stage. 2004 `Wearing the yellow jersey and climbing the top step and making history will be the moment I carry forever.' At 32, Armstrong won five individual stages and the team time trial for a record sixth title. He also beat several past tour winners in this race as well. Congratulations Mr. Armstrong!!! "There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working "He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, In that list of quotes I am sure you noticed the "Gods" of the left Bill Clit-on and his It looks to me like they all wanted it, and when it was a resounding success, and the President started getting credit for it, they thought they'd all better condemn the President and our involvement in Iraq. This just proves that most Dems are like "Waffles" in that they say what people want to hear at the moment and waffle the minute the polls show that the rest of their lunatic leftists are not happy. I get so sick of the Democrats condemning actions that a Republican president has taken, when all it takes is a little research to see that at one time they were the greatest supporters for the President and whatever his actions were. I was deployed to Kuwait in 1998 during the build up. We were on the verge. We thought that war was imminent. We also had nearly as many troops at my location as were there in Desert Storm. Once again, Slick Willy made a number of claims and promises just to go back on them. My deployment was extended from 90 days to nearly 6 months because "we were prepping to invade Iraq", like Somalia; Clinton withdrew and left the problems for another administration to fix. Had Slick Willy been a man of his word George Bush wouldn't have had to lead us into Iraq and I believe there is a strong possibility that 9/11 would have been avoided. The Democratic National Convention kicks off today, let's see what kind of lies they spew at or about the president and what kind of empty promises they make. SlagleRock Out! On the video, hijacker Khalid al-Mihdhar, is seen passing through a security checkpoint at Dulles International Airport on Sept. 11, 2001, just hours before American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. I am sure as time goes on we will learn even more disturbing facts about how easy these hijackers got onto our planes. All Americans who travel need to be prepared. If a plane is hijacked by terrorists it is pretty safe to assume they are not planning on a safe landing. Just as they did on flight 93 you have to struggle for control of the aircraft. It is better to take your final flight as did Todd Beamer and his compatriots and save countless lives than it is to sit and do nothing. It is sad to think that had security at Dulles and Logan been just a little bit better the tragedy of 9/11 may have never happened. SlagleRock Out! Posted by SlagleRock at 08:23 AM | Comments (7) July 21, 2004Taps (Corrected)On the 19th of this month I posted an article titled TAPS and it told the origins of the song and the lyrics many don't know exist. Thanks to Mollbot for this link which corrects the original posting and offers more information on the subject. Here is the corrected story. Of all the military bugle calls, none is so easily recognizable or more apt to render emotion than the call Taps. The melody is both eloquent and haunting and the history of it's origin is interesting and somewhat clouded in controversy. In the British Army, a similar call known as "Last Post" has been sounded over soldier's graves after interment since 1885. But the use of Taps is unique with the United States military, since the call is sounded at funerals, wreath layings and memorial services. Up to the Civil War, the infantry call for "Lights Out" was that set down in Silas Casey's (1801 1882) Tactics, which had been borrowed from the French. The music for Taps was changed by Union General Daniel Butterfield for his Brigade (Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac) in July 1862. Daniel Adams Butterfield (1831-1901), the son of a famous expressman was born in Utica, New York and graduated from Union College at Schenectady. He was the eastern superintendent of the American Express Company in New York when the Civil War broke out. A colonel in the 12th Regiment of the New York State Militia, he was promoted to Brigadier General and given command of a brigade when the militia was mustered into the Army of the Potomac. As the story goes, General Butterfield was not pleased with the call for "Lights Out", feeling that the call was too formal to signal the day's end. With the help of the brigade bugler (Oliver W Norton) Butterfield created the call to honor his men while in camp at Harrison's Landing, Virginia following the Seven Day's battle. The call, sounded that night in July, 1862, soon spread to other units of the Union Army and was even used by the Confederates. It was made an Official bugle call after the war. The highly romantic account of how Butterfield "composed" the call surfaced in 1898 following a magazine article written that summer. The August, 1898 issue of Century Magazine contained an article called "The Trumpet in Camp and Battle" by Gustav Kobbe, a music historian and critic. He was writing about the origin of bugle calls in the Civil War and in reference to Taps, wrote: "In speaking of our trumpet calls I purposely omitted one with which it seemed most appropriate to close this article, for it is the call which closes the soldiers.... "Lights Out". I have not been able to trace this call to any other service. If it seems probable, it was original with Major Seymour, he has given our army the most beautiful of all trumpet calls". Kobbe was using as his basis for the calls the army drill manual on infantry tactics prepared by Major General Emory Upton in 1867 (revised in1874) The bugle calls in the manual were compiled by Major (later General) Truman Seymour of the 5th US Artillery. Kobbe's inability to find the origin of "Light's Out" (Taps) prompted a letter from Oliver W Norton in Chicago who claimed he knew how the call came about and that he was the first to perform it. Norton wrote:... "During the early part of the Civil War, I was bugler at the Headquarters of Butterfield's Brigade, Meroll's Division, Fitz-John Porter's Corps, Army of the Potomac. Up to July, 1862, the infantry call for Taps was that set down in Casey's Tactics, which Mr Kobbe says was borrowed from the French. One day, soon after the seven days' battles on the Peninsular, when the Army of the Potomac was lying in camp at Harrison's Landing, General Daniel Butterfield. then commanding our Brigade, sent for me, and showing me some notes on a staff written in pencil on the back of an envelope, asked me to sound them on my bugle. I did this several times, playing the music as written. He changed it somewhat, lengthening some notes and shortening others, but retaining the melody as he first gave it to me. After getting it to his satisfaction, he directed me to sound that call for Taps thereafter in place of the regulation call. ... The next day I was visited by several buglers from neighboring brigades, asking for copies of the music, which I gladly furnished. I think no general order was issued from army headquarters authorizing the substitution of this for the regulation call, but as each brigade commander exercised his own discretion in such minor matters, the call was gradually taken up through the Army of the Potomac. ... I did not presume to question General Butterfield at the tine, but from the manner in which the call was given to me, I have no doubt he composed it in his tent at Harrison's Landing. I think General Butterfield is living at Cold Spring, New York. If you think the matter of sufficient interest, and care to write him on the subject, I have no doubt he will confirm my statement." The editor at the Century did contact Butterfield who wrote back; "I recall, in my dim memory, the substantial truth of the statement made by Norton, of the 83rd Pa., about bugle calls. His letter gives the impression that I personally wrote the notes for the call. The facts are, that at that time I could sound calls on the bugle as a necessary part of military knowledge and instruction for an officer commanding a regiment or brigade. I had acquired this as a regimental commander. ... The call of Taps did not seem to be as smooth, melodious and musical as it should be, and I called in some one who could write music, and practiced a change in the call of Taps until I had it suit my ear, and then, as Norton writes, got it to my taste without being able to write music or knowing the technical name of any note, but, simply by ear, arranged it as Norton describes. I did not recall him in connection with it, but his story is substantially correct..." On the surface it was not until the Century article that this seems to be the true history of the origin of Taps. Indeed, the many articles written about Taps cite this story as the beginning of Butterfield's association with the call. Certainly Butterfield never went out of his way to claim credit for its composition and it was not until the Century article that the Origin came to light There are however, significant differences in Butterfield's and Norton's stories. Norton says that the music given to him by Butterfield that night was written down on an envelope while Butterfield wrote that he could not read or write music! Also Butterfield's words seem to suggest that he was not composing a melody in Norton's presence, but actually arranging or revising an existing one. As a commander of a brigade, he knew of the bugle calls needed to relay troop commands. All officers of the time were required to know the calls and were expected to be able to play the bugle. Butterfield was no different - he could play the bugle but could not read music. As a colonel of the 12th N.Y. Regiment, before the war, he had ordered his men to be thoroughly familiar with calls and drills. What could account for the variation in stories? My research shows that Butterfield did not compose Taps but actually revised an earlier bugle call. This sounds blasphemous to many, but the fact is that Taps existed in an early version of the call Tattoo. As a signal for end of the day, armies have used Tattoo to signal troops to prepare them for bedtime roll call. The call was used to notify the soldiers to cease the evening's drinking and return to their garrisons. It was sounded an hour before the final call of the day to extinguish all fires and lights. This early version is found in three drill and tactical manuals - the Winfield Scott (1786-1866) manual of 1835, the Samuel Cooper (1798-1876) manual of 1836 and the William Gilham (1819-1872) manual of 1861. At 10:56 PM EDT, July 20, 1969, Armstrong stepped from the "Eagle" onto the Moon's dusty surface with the words, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." Astronaut Neil Armstrong first uttered those words 35 years ago today. Do you remember where you were or what you were doing when the astronauts made the US the first (and to date only) country to reach the moon? Although I wasn't even a thought to my father who was in high school at the time, or my Mother who had yet to start high school the moon landing has greatly impacted my life. Like most Americans I have seen the images of the first men on the moon hundreds if not thousands of times. It is awe inspiring to think not only that we were the first to do it, but we have even achieved private space flight while so many other nations aren't even close to exiting Earths atmosphere. When you think of all of the wonderful things that have come from the space program it becomes very clear that the research alone is invaluable. If any of you have ever been to a military funeral in which taps were played this brings out a new meaning of it. We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, "Taps." I, too, have felt the chills while listening to "Taps" but I have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn't even know there was more than one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn't know if you had either so I thought I'd pass it along. He loved his Marines and often slipped into the mess hall wearing a faded old field jacket without any rank insignia on it. He would go through the chow line just like a private. (In this way, assured of being given the same rations that the lowest enlisted man received. And, woe be it to the mess officer if the food was found to be "unfit in quality or quantity.") Upon becoming Commandant, General Gray was expected to do a great deal of"formal entertaining," fancy dinner parties in full dress blue uniform. Now, the general would rather have been in the field eating cold "C-rats" around a fighting hole with a bunch of young "hard charging" Marines. But the General knew his duty, and as a Marine he was determined to do it to the best of his ability. During these formal parties a detachment of highly polished Marines from"Eighth and Eye" (Marine Barracks located at 8th and I Streets in Washington, D.C., home of the Silent Drill Team) were detailed to assume the position of "parade rest" at various intervals around the ballroom where the festivities were being held. Posted by SlagleRock at 12:04 AM | Comments (5) July 18, 2004Enter the Parking Garage: Patriots Fight BackA few nights ago two friends and I decided to do the tourist thing. We decided to go downtown, see the river walk and have some genuine Mexican food. So, we did just that. We parked in an underground parking garage near the mall on the river walk and strolled up and down memory lane. We BS'd about the first time we all got to go off base after basic training and how funny that was. The three of us had a great meal and a few beers at one of the tiny Mexican restaurants on the river. As our evening wound down we headed back to the car. We got in the car and started to back out of the parking spot when all of a sudden a little white car slammed on the brakes directly behind us, preventing us from backing out. Immediately three males (teens to early twenties) jumped out of the car and ran up to the drivers side of my friends car. As they were approaching, my buddy (we'll call him Bruce for this story, you'll see why in a minute LMAO) jumped out of the car, and I hopped out as well. Initially the three individuals didn't even acknowledge Bruce. The littlest one of the bunch started calling us everything from "crackers" to "bitches." He immediately addressed my second friend (we'll call him Pappy) who remained in the back seat. Now being cops (at least the two of us who had nuts enough to get out of the car) we did what we are trained to do: we tried to diffuse the situation. In the mean time, I was slowly making my way around these three thugs unnoticed. The little thug we'll call Stupid (and again you'll see why) leans down and looks at Pappy and says, "What did you say bitch?" Pappy says, "Dude what are you talking about?" Stupid says "You flipped me off and called me a fag when we drove by, Bitch!" Now in reality even if Pappy would have done something like this (which he did not) those thugs never would have been able to see him as Bruce's car windows are tinted jet black. Bruce steps forward a little and says, "Hey, you guys take off, this dude didn't say anything to you, we were talking to each other in the car so I don't know what you think you saw." So long story short, Stupid and Pappy continue to yell back and forth for several minutes. Finally Stupid tells Pappy, "You are getting your ass beat bitch, either you can get out here and take a beat down or I am coming in there! Better yet, how much money you got bitch, maybe we'll just take all you bitches money." Oh and yes, chicken shit Pappy is still in his seat with his seatbelt on. So Pappy says one last time, "Just go away I didn't say shit to you." About that time Stupid made his move and started towards the car door. Bruce steps between them and says, "You aren't getting anywhere near my fucking car or my friend" Now unbeknownst to me as well as these three thugs, old Bruce is a Black Belt in three different martial arts. As Stupid is moving in, Bruce jumps straight up in the air and snap kicks this little thug under the chin so hard his head flips back like a Pez dispenser. As soon as it all started I made my move. I grabbed the biggest of the three from behind in a standard choke hold. Once I had better control, I turned him around and adjusted my hold so that I was crushing his windpipe. Immediately after I grabbed the big Mongo looking fucker, the third thug started toward me. Mongo started gurgling get back, "Get back! This dude is going to break my neck." So turns out they had a chicken shit in their group too, or at least they do for now. The third punk stepped back towards their car and watched as Bruce proceeded to beat the ever living shit out of his mouthy little friend, Stupid. I held the big guy in a death grip so he couldn't move. Every time he attempted to free himself I proceeded to tenderize his ribs with several ferocious punches. After what seemed like hours of scuffling, Mongo dropped like a lead weight, and I thought I had killed him. When Mongo dropped, the third guy must have got his second wind. He started at me like a bull. Without hesitation I kicked him in the balls so hard he could have worn his manhood as earrings. As he started to double over, I knuckle punched him in the throat. He hit the ground next to Mongo like a ton of bricks. After a second or two, thug #3 gets back up and starts running towards the car. To my relief Mongo came to (he just passed out) and ran to the car as well. They drove off and left their mouthy little friend to the wolves. Now we clearly have the upper hand so I go over and pull Bruce off of Stupid. This little thug looked like Rocky after his fight with Apollo Creed. This kid's face looked like 20 lbs. of ground beef. He was barely conscious. About the time I pull Bruce off a cop rolled up. He immediately cuffed the little thug. We thought it odd that he didn't cuff us, but it turns out that someone had called the cops and told them we were getting car jacked. On his way up to our level he could also see a little of what was going on as he looked diagonally through the garage. Three hours later, several statements and hospitalization for all three of the "hard asses" we were let go. No bail, no notifications to the base (thank god) and no arrests for the three of us. It turned out that this had happened several times in the past few weeks to people who were parked in that same area (blind spot to the security cameras). These thugs were deliberately targeting people with out of state plates, starting a fight and then stealing whatever they could. In the process of giving our statements, the cops asked Pappy where he was during all of this. He said, "I just froze, I don't know why, but I froze." The cop responded with, "It was a good thing you hang out with Bruce Lee and Hulk Hogan or this could have been very bad for you." Pappy actually caught a lot of shit from the cops for leaving us hanging, but in hind sight it was funny as hell. Those three thought they were going to get paid. Instead they got hospitalized and arrested. The big guy had a sprained neck and broken ribs. The little guy had a broken nose and lost a couple of teeth, and their friend knows exactly what his testicles taste like. Moral of the story, you never know what you might get into, and starting a fight with complete strangers can clearly come back to bite you in the ass. That's one for the good guys. SlagleRock Out!

That class is to get qualified on the M2 .50 caliber Browning Machine Gun (BMG) which I will then in turn teach at my own duty station. So, to post on a lighter subject I thought I'd mention this American Marvel. There is no doubt to anyone who visits this site that we live in the greatest nation on Earth. This is one example of why. American Ingenuity! Truly John Browning was decades ahead of his time. The .50 Cal BMG has lent its design ideas to numerous other weapons throughout the years. Ponder this for a moment. The .50 cal BMG is more than half as old as our nation and it is still one of if not the premier long range, man portable, machine gun. Mr. Browning invented the .50 Cal in the late 1800's and it has remained unchanged (mechanically) since it was introduced into the United States Inventory in 1918. It was intended to serve as a long range sniper weapon due to its ability to engage (accurately) targets out to nearly 2,000 meters. Think about that for a second. You can accurately hit a target at distances farther than a mile!!!!!! In fact during Vietnam (nearly a hundred years after the gun was invented) Marine Gunnery Sergeant Carlos N. Hathcock set the record for the longest sniper kill at a distance of 2,500 yards when he felled a North Vietnamese officer. It is truly an amazing weapon. It averages a 700 grain projectile. That is more than ten times larger than an M-16 rd. The standard Armor Piercing round for the M2 can penetrate a full inch of Armor Plating (homogenous) or .9 in of Face Hardened Armor Plating. It will penetrate nearly two feet of sand, dirt or clay at distances of 1,500 meters. The .50 Caliber BMG and its little brother the .30 Caliber BMG (No longer used by the US) have paved the way for nearly all modern firearms. While leftists may not consider Mr. Browning’s machine guns worthy of patriotic mention he is in fact. The quad and twin .50's used by the Navy likely saved numerous lives at Pearl Harbor. He has provided the military with the cornerstone for the weapons systems of the future and he did it more than 100 years ago. SlagleRock Out! Kerry upset some families of 9/11 victims yesterday when he arrived - late - to a private memorial dedication in a sirened motorcade and glad-handed as though he were on the campaign trail. The senator, in Boston for the day, hopped in his motorcade at the Four Seasons, drove around the Boston Public Garden and arrived at the memorial with his sizable entourage in tow. Imagine that in another display of his lunacy Kerry offends many family members attending a private memorial dedication to the victims of September 11th. I mean honestly, you know you are attending a solemn event and you arrive with sirens wailing? Don't tell me they had to do it because he is a senator or a presidential wannabe. He could very easily have chosen to be on time and/or arrive in a more tactful manner. Kerry's aides said the event was non-political. "As a senator from this state, and as an American, Sen. Kerry came to pay his private respects to families and friends who suffered a great loss on 9/11," spokesman David Wade said. "This isn't a day for politics, and John Kerry attended the ceremony quietly and respectfully without staff in tow, keeping the media at a distance," Wade said. "John Kerry remembers what it was like to lose friends on that terrible day, and it's seared in him as an American why we must do whatever it takes to keep Americans safe and destroy the terrorists." So he just publicly stated that Kerry attended quietly and without the media in tow. So in other words the families of the victims are all liars? No Mr. Wade you are clearly the liar, and while all politicians have an agenda clearly Mr. (used very loosely) Kerry's agenda is not to take care of or look out for the people. So now not only do these people have to relive the horror that was 9/11 at this memorial they get to be called liars in the public media by a presidential wannabe and his lunatic staff. It's what the Kerry camp resorted to again Thursday to excuse the vile criticism of President Bush by the Democratic nominee's Hollywood backers at a New York fund-raiser. 'Performers have a right to speak their minds even when we don't agree with everything they say. That's the freedom John Kerry put his life on the line to defend,' Kerry spokesmen David Wade said. And what was Kerry defending? John Mellencamp singing a song with the lyrics, 'Texas Bandito, how much money did you put in your pocket today?' And 'He's just another cheap thug who sacrifices our young?' Then there was Whoopi Goldberg's elongated sexual pun using the president's last name. And surely Kerry fought valiantly in Vietnam to ensure Chevy Chase could opine: 'Clinton plays the sax, John plays the guitar, and the president's a liar.' Instead of denouncing the repugnant comments...Kerry simply went on with his stump speech. He only took issue with Goldberg calling running mate John Edwards a 'kid.' That Kerry, by his silence, tacitly endorsed the content of his supporters' remarks says something troubling about the tone of his campaign. That he allowed his military service to be used once again like some prop in a movie, says something even more troubling about his character." --The Boston Herald Posted by SlagleRock at 04:45 PM | Comments (1) Lunatic Leftists Fall Completely Off The Deep EndIn an article recently posted in the Seattle Post Intelligencer (their title not mine; liberal puke paper) a sad story was told about the state of affairs in America. Posted by SlagleRock at 03:38 PM | Comments (2) July 13, 2004My Interview With An Iranian-AmericanCancel that title! It should simply read my interview with an American. I am currently in Texas at Lackland AFB, San Antonio. I arrived in San Antonio yesterday afternoon. After arriving at the Airport I hailed a cab for the short ride to the base. The cab driver was clearly a man on Middle Eastern decent. After loading my bags he introduced himself and asked where I was headed. I told the man that I needed to go to Lackland AFB. He immediately smiled and said, "Oh Air Force, my only son is in the Air Force and he is on his way to Baghdad for a 6-month tour.” As we started to talk I mentioned my tour in the Middle East, and the fact that I had been more than once. First response he had was, "I am glad you made it home safe." After hearing he clearly loved our country I asked where he was from originally. He told me, "Iran, Iran is a terrible place." He went on to explain that he came to the US 27 years earlier to attend the University of Texas. He met his wife (Also of Iranian decent in college and their son was/is the only naturalized citizen in their family). After realizing that politics were not only a safe conversation, but an encouraged one, we discussed many things. We started with Afghanistan and Iraq. Mr. Kalliff (as I will call him) told me that ultimately the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan will be much better for the US's involvement. He said, "The Taliban is nothing but a bunch of uneducated brutes, bullies, terrorists or whatever." He also said that "those" people don't even know why or what they fight for. If only they could taste freedom they'd never have an animosity towards the US. He said, that Saddam "is a son of a bitch. He is just a cowardly dictator who hid behind his abusive actions." He also said that "these" dictators are the sole reason that the Middle East is hundreds of years behind the rest of the modern world. I asked him if he ever considered moving home. He smiled at me and said, "I am home." He went on to explain that he would rather be "just some poor cab driver who can honestly say he is an American than a wealthy Iranian any day!" Mr. Kalliff was very passionate about these United States. He said he hopes more than anything that President Bush is re-elected and pushes for a regime change in Iran. He even said, "I know I could lose family in a war, but if it freed my people it would be an acceptable loss." After talking about the war on terror I turned the discussion to politicians. My first question was what do you think about President Bush. His immediate reaction was, "I liked his Dad better, but he is a good man. He can be a little bit of a bully, but sometimes that is necessary." He said that he would like to see a democratic president elected because, "they are good to the people and the economy". He also said that now is not the time. Mr. Kalliff was very excited when he said, "John Kerry is a fucking liar, pardon my language but I think it would be a catastrophe if Kerry were elected". As our conversation ended and I was unloading my gear from his cab, he once again held out his hand to shake mine. As I shook his hand he told me, "thank you for fighting for the greatest nation on Earth and making this a free place where even a poor boy from Iran can live free". Sound too good to be true? Every word of it is true. He sounded every bit as patriotic as any member of the Armed Forces. It was hard for me to decide which he was more proud of, his son the Airman, or his right to vote and US citizenship. Maybe, just maybe, there is hope for the Middle East. He certainly can't be the only person smart enough to realize that it is the dictatorships that are causing the demise of the Arab world. SlagleRock Out! Kerry said, "Every performer tonight in their own way either verbally through their music through their lyrics have conveyed to you the heart and soul of our country." Your Senior Advisor Tad Devine said that you believed that releasing musical performances "might violate copyrights and licensing agreements for the entertainers who performed and allow the Bush campaign to use the tape in commercials against Kerry and Edwards" Sincerely, Posted by SlagleRock at 04:26 PM | Comments (1) Clit-on Has An Opinion (Does Anybody Give A Damn?)Although the Bush administration believes former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was an inherent threat to the Mideast, going to war in Iraq has not aided the Middle East peace process, former President Clinton told CNN in a recent interview. Take a look at CNN.com Billary Clit-on thinks that the liberation of Iraq won't aid in the quest for peace in the Middle East. How can this be? How can it not help to free an oppressed people? Did it not help the people of Europe when the American led allies kicked the shit out of Hitler's boys? How can you say that the invasion and subsequent liberation of one of the most (if not the most) oppressed nations on earth won't aid in the peace process in the Mid East? Democracy is like a virus (a very good virus mind you) with no cure. Pick any formerly Communist/Socialist or general dictatorship and look how its freedom and move to democracy has spread to the nations around it! A truly free nation is a happy nation, a secure nation and a nation that will fight for its freedoms. Look at the US, we have millions of people who would make the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedoms and ensure that generations of Americans to come will know what it is like to live free. I believe that one day Iraq may understand this type of freedom. Yes, they have a long arduous road ahead, but the road to freedom will spread to surrounding nations. Ultimately only free nations will survive. I don't agree with Bubba on this one. Sorry Bill, I think you are wrong. SlagleRock Out! Wassef Ali Hassoun The Marine Vehicle operator turned translator is safely back in US custody. There are a myriad of questions that surround this Marine and his situation. Hopefully in the weeks to come we will know exactly what happened. From the pages of CNN.com RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany (CNN) -- U.S. Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, who resurfaced in Lebanon after disappearing in Iraq, was being debriefed Saturday at a U.S. military base in Germany. Mohammed Hassoun, the Marine's brother, said Wassef told him in a phone call Saturday morning to his home in West Jordan, Utah, that he was being treated "very well." Wassef indicated the debriefing was going well and that neither the FBI nor the Naval Criminal Investigative Service had given him any indication for concern, Mohammed said. The 24-year-old translator also told his brother that he was staying in a suite at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. The Marine may return to his base at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Monday or Tuesday, his brother said. Military officials want to know Wassef Hassoun's whereabouts and whom he was with between his disappearance June 19 from the Marine camp outside Fallujah and his re-emergence Wednesday with his Lebanese family in Tripoli. During his disappearance, Hassoun had been listed as captured in Iraq after being shown on a video blindfolded with a sword being held over his head. Officials have said Hassoun would talk to a SERE (survival, evasion, resistance and escape) Team, which would seek operational information from him that could help troops who find themselves in similar situations. Officials said Hassoun would be promised confidentiality for those sessions and that information he relates cannot be used against him. Hassoun in 'excellent' shape "I found him in excellent physical condition, and I did not see any bruises or any injuries on his person," Hassoun's attending physician, U.S. Navy Cmdr. Peter Marco, said Friday. "He's very exhausted." Marco said Hassoun, who is 6 feet tall, had lost about 20 pounds -- dropping from 190 to about 170 -- and the Marine told him his spirits were down before his reunion with his family in Lebanon. Marco said Hassoun also reported suffering from chronic headaches. A clinical psychologist at the briefing said Hassoun reported he had slept only two or three hours a night in the past few weeks. Hassoun is undergoing medical examinations at Landstuhl as part of routine repatriation procedures, which also include addressing the Marine's psychological health. Video claimed Marine would be killed The video was broadcast June 27 on Al-Jazeera. A narrator on the tape said the captive would be killed if the United States did not free jailed Iraqis. (Full story) At one point, reports on Islamist Web sites said Hassoun had been beheaded. On Monday, a group claiming to have kidnapped Hassoun said it had taken him to safety after he promised not to return to the U.S. military, Al-Jazeera reported. (Full story) Welcome home Cpl. Even newspapers like the Washington Post are starting to get fed up with Waffles. Please read their article, Kerry Vows To Restore 'Truth' to Presidency In an effort to denounce integrity within the Bush administration John Kerry was caught in at least two lies of his own. President Bush has governed in a dishonest fashion, trampling values on every issue except fighting terrorism and leaving voters "clamoring for restoration of credibility and trust in the White House again," John F. Kerry and John Edwards said in an interview. ... "We have not stood up and attacked our opponents in personal ways," Kerry said. This week alone, Kerry has criticized Bush personally in speeches for lying, professional laziness, waiting until right before the election to indict Enron Corp.'s former chief executive, Kenneth L. Lay, lacking values and even having worse hair than the two Democrats. Some advisers are privately counseling Kerry to tone down his attacks on Bush. Not that most sane Americans didn't already know it, but just for those of you who are a little slow on the uptake, KERRY IS A LIAR! Well, a nightmare, perhaps... No sooner had John Kerry's veep advances been spurned for the umpteenth time by his sweetheart, John McCain, than he announced Plan B: Erstwhile trial lawyer John Edwards would instead join the Demo ticket. Of course, it only took a New York second for Edwards' opponents to launch their criticism. "In the Senate four years -- and that is the full extent of public life -- no international experience, no military experience.... The American people want an experienced hand at the helm of state. This is not the time for on-the-job training in the White House on national-security issues. ... I think that the world is looking for leadership that is tested and sure." Hard-hitting criticism, to say the least, but that's just what Kerry had to say about Edwards prior to tapping him for the bottom of his ticket. So, just who is John Edwards, and why is the man who selected him so skeptical about his ability to lead? As has already been made clear by Demo strategists adhering to their "divide and conquer" class-warfare play-book, Edwards grew up POOR -- in stark contrast to John Kerry. Edwards' father was a mill worker -- an honest job, in stark contrast to his son, a trial lawyer who made his millions suing doctors. Indeed, John Edwards pocketed millions by parading cerebral-palsy babies before emotional juries and winning massive "negligence" awards against obstetricians. Here, the Edwards legacy is an onerous one: Obstetricians, afraid for their professional lives, are now performing four times as many dangerous Caesarean sections as in previous decades -- this despite an utterly dubious link between natural childbirth and cerebral palsy. What's more, the cost of malpractice insurance for obstetricians has gone through the roof, while the number of obstetricians has, understandably, gone through the floor. (The American Medical Association lists 20 states that now have critical shortages of obstetricians.) Through it all, POOR John played his drama parts well, socking away 30% of those multi-million dollar awards. Of course, he picked his cases carefully, turning away the families of children who died in childbirth because living "CP" babies reap much higher awards. (For the record, it is worth noting that most cases of fetal-brain injury occur long before labor begins -- but that inconvenient fact never seemed to deter Edwards.) Who pays for POOR John's luxury accommodations and motor vehicles? You do, of course. The cost of such litigation adds about five percent to the cost of all products and services -- in effect, a hidden tax of about $3,200 on the average household. But we digress. The question was: Who is this POOR John, and why is his running mate so skeptical about his ability to lead? If you want the long answer, link to the Internet's most comprehensive resource on Kerry and Edwards: Kerry-04.com or Kerry-Edwards04.info (That's right, seasoned readers of this column know that The Patriot tagged the Kerry-Edwards ticket long ago. Indeed, as noted in The Washington Post this week, we purchased the aforementioned domains in order to develop a strong web presence -- a presence dedicated to telling folks the truth about John Kerry.) As for the short answer, Edwards' only presidential resume builder is that he's a first-term senator. Having spent much of his professional life making money on human misery, POOR John has held no other elected office, and his Senate campaign was funded mostly by fellow trial lawyers. (And, boy, did they ever get their money's worth! Edwards has devoted most of his short tenure in the Senate to blocking any measures aimed at tort reform.) Perhaps most telling about his effectiveness as a legislator is this little statistic: Of the 74 bills he sponsored, not a single one has emerged from committee for a floor vote. The same is true for most of his amendments and resolutions.) Kerry's aforementioned reservations about Edwards notwithstanding, he changed his tune this past Tuesday morning when announcing his pick. Kerry, who can flip-flop faster than a professional pancake maker, chortled, "I want you to know we think this is a dream ticket. We've got better vision. We've got better ideas. We've got real plans. We've got a better sense of what's happening to America. And we've got better hair." We'll certainly cede him that. Kerry, ever a man of the people, spends some $150 for a hair cut at DC's hoity-toity Cristophe Salon. As for John Edwards, well, he actually looks like a Breck Girl. Yet despite their glorious coiffures, Kerry can't be giddy about Edwards' anti-growth (read: anti-jobs) voting record, or his anti-military voting record, or his anti-family voting record, or his anti-tax-cut voting record. In these respects, Edwards does anything but "balance" the Kerry ticket. To the contrary, his populist rural Southern gentlemanly facade simply doesn't square with his hard-Left Senate voting record. In fact, the non-partisan National Journal, which has been rating voting records for a long time, puts Edwards a close fourth behind Kerry, who is rated the most Left-voting member of the Senate. Without question, then, this is the most liberal major-party ticket in American history -- a ticket that outflanks even Mondale-Ferraro. So what can Edwards realistically deliver to the Kerry ticket? Did we mention he grew up POOR? Financial footnote: On the subject of poverty, John Kerry, already the wealthiest member of Congress, is really raking in the bucks. Campaign Kerry has dwarfed the Bush campaign's cash intake this year, reporting more than $175 million in donations -- much of it from his Left elite cadre of Hollywonk glitterati. In addition to all the free Leftmedia advertising, Kerry also gets a bounce from America-hating fiction films like Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Posted by SlagleRock at 06:46 PM | Comments (1) Quote Of The Day"It solidifies the fact that John Kerry is a liberal. ...[It] really solidifies the fact that this is the most liberal ticket that the Democrats have put up for, basically, modern times. Cpl Wassef Ali Hassoun, a Marine missing since mid June has been reported on in many formats, from front page to middle of the paper. We have heard that he was "captured". Then we heard that he went willingly with Iraqi's in an effort to desert the US military. And now the latest news... On July 4th ABC News reported that Cpl Wassef Ali Hassoun had been killed by the terrorist group known as The Ansar al-Sunna Army. Please read the article. Today CNN reported that Hassoun was freed and had "contacted the family in West Jordan, Utah, and Lebanon and told them that he had called the U.S. Embassy in Beirut and asked that he be picked up from an undisclosed location in Lebanon. The source said Hassoun sounded healthy and happy." So now he has returned from the dead? Also today, the Tacoma News Tribune has reported that the family of Hassoun is disputing the claim that he is safe and alive. The tribune reported that the brother of a Marine corporal captured in Iraq is denying new reports that the serviceman has been released and has contacted family members. "I hope we hear from him, but so far, nothing," Mohamad Hassoun told The Associated Press. So where are we now? We are absolutely no closer to knowing squat about the fate of Cpl Hassoun. Is he alive? I hope so! Is he a deserter? I hope not! Is the media grossly irresponsible? Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the family of Wassef Ali Hassoun, I hope he is safe and returns to you soon. To the media, I challenge you to return to factual unbiased reporting. Many people count on you for the facts, maybe it is time to return to reporting only fact and no speculation. SlagleRock Out!

Article Published: Saturday, July 03, 2004 - 6:20:52 PM PST Daily News.com Loony Left impugns its own patriotism I first heard "patriot" used derisively when I was a Vietnam War protester in the 1960s. "Patriot" and "flag-waver" were terms used to denigrate those we perceived as knee-jerk supporters of an immoral war. We felt we were the true patriots. We hated Nixon, because Tricky Dick portrayed us as anti-American. How dare he impugn our patriotism? Whole lies, half-truths, false presumptions, ignored facts, faulty logic, snide innuendo, unflattering handpicked film footage, all deliberately packaged to denigrate the president and the war effort, do not amount to an act of patriotism. (Yes, I saw the film.) It also violates the basic American value of truth and fairness. No newspaper or magazine today would publish such a shameful hatchet job about anyone. (I know, as I've been a magazine journalist for 30 years.) One of my college roommates in 1969 had a dirt-bag friend who crashed on our couch once for a few days. I told him I wanted the slimeball out of the house. "He's cool, man!" My roommate exclaimed. "He smokes dope, he likes the Beatles, he hates Nixon -- he's a bro', man." When your only criterion for "brotherhood" is a shared hatred, you will embrace slime. Nixon didn't need to run against McGovern. He ran against Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden, Abbie Hoffman, Bernadine Dohrn, The Chicago 7, The Black Panthers, the bomb-throwing Weather Underground and the SLA -- and Manson. He ran against the anti-American lunatic Left the Democrats should have thrown out of their house. A favorite person, a favorite movie a favorite holiday etc.. And for each one of those we all have a favorite moment to accompany each of these. One of my favorite holidays is Independence Day. It is a chance to look back and reflect on the previous years freedoms. It is a time for family and friends to get together and really appreciate the life we live in the United States. My favorite Independence Day was in 1998. I was in my third month of what would end up being a 5.5-month deployment in Kuwait. I was part of a large build up near the Iraq border. We didn't have many things for entertainment or celebration. The Services Squadron decided to host an Independence Day party. They barbecued the worst steak, hot dogs and hamburgers I have ever eaten. We joked all day long that it was really camel ass and goat balls. Since alcohol was not allowed in Kuwait we also had tons of near beer. If you've never tried a non-alcoholic beer don't bother, it will only piss you off. They hosted games, such as a dunk tank, water volleyball, softball etc. Like most events the celebration started with the posting of the colors. The honor guard was unique it consisted of Two US Airman and two British Royal Air Force Airman. Near the end of the opening ceremonies an amazing thing happened; the Royal Air Force flew overhead in their Tornado fighter jets, during the fly over they performed a missing man formation. The Royal Air Force officer who was narrating the opening ceremonies said that the RAF wanted to show their appreciation for America and honor all Americans on their Independence Day. Think about that for a moment. The country that we fought for our independence two hundred and twenty two years prior was honoring us. Everyone knows that England is our greatest ally and likely always will be, but that was the icing on the cake. The mutual respect that our two nations share could never have been more obvious than that moment when one jet peeled away from the formation as a symbol of all Americans that never returned home. Enjoy your Independence and remember all who fight to keep it that way. SlagleRock Out! Posted by SlagleRock at 10:54 AM | Comments (3) What Independence Day Means to Me, By President Ronald ReaganReceived this today via The Federalist. It's a good read from a great man. "What July Fourth Means to Me" --Ronald Reagan For one who was born and grew up in the small towns of the Midwest, there is a special kind of nostalgia about the Fourth of July. I remember it as a day almost as long-anticipated as Christmas. This was helped along by the appearance in store windows of all kinds of fireworks and colorful posters advertising them with vivid pictures. No later than the third of July -- sometimes earlier -- Dad would bring home what he felt he could afford to see go up in smoke and flame. We'd count and recount the number of firecrackers, display pieces and other things and go to bed determined to be up with the sun so as to offer the first, thunderous notice of the Fourth of July. I'm afraid we didn't give too much thought to the meaning of the day. And, yes, there were tragic accidents to mar it, resulting from careless handling of the fireworks. I'm sure we're better off today with fireworks largely handled by professionals. Yet there was a thrill never to be forgotten in seeing a tin can blown 30 feet in the air by a giant "cracker" -- giant meaning it was about 4 inches long. But enough of nostalgia. Somewhere in our growing up we began to be aware of the meaning of days and with that awareness came the birth of patriotism. July Fourth is the birthday of our nation. I believed as a boy, and believe even more today, that it is the birthday of the greatest nation on earth. There is a legend about the day of our nation's birth in the little hall in Philadelphia, a day on which debate had raged for hours. The men gathered there were honorable men hard-pressed by a king who had flouted the very laws they were willing to obey. Even so, to sign the Declaration of Independence was such an irretrievable act that the walls resounded with the words "treason, the gallows, the headsman's axe," and the issue remained in doubt. The legend says that at that point a man rose and spoke. He is described as not a young man, but one who had to summon all his energy for an impassioned plea. He cited the grievances that had brought them to this moment and finally, his voice falling, he said, "They may turn every tree into a gallows, every hole into a grave, and yet the words of that parchment can never die. To the mechanic in the workshop, they will speak hope; to the slave in the mines, freedom. Sign that parchment. Sign if the next moment the noose is around your neck, for that parchment will be the textbook of freedom, the Bible of the rights of man forever." He fell back exhausted. The 56 delegates, swept up by his eloquence, rushed forward and signed that document destined to be as immortal as a work of man can be. When they turned to thank him for his timely oratory, he was not to be found, nor could any be found who knew who he was or how he had come in or gone out through the locked and guarded doors. Well, that is the legend. But we do know for certain that 56 men, a little band so unique we have never seen their like since, had pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Some gave their lives in the war that followed, most gave their fortunes, and all preserved their sacred honor. What manner of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists, eleven were merchants and tradesmen, and nine were farmers. They were soft-spoken men of means and education; they were not an unwashed rabble. They had achieved security but valued freedom more. Their stories have not been told nearly enough. John Hart was driven from the side of his desperately ill wife. For more than a year he lived in the forest and in caves before he returned to find his wife dead, his children vanished, his property destroyed. He died of exhaustion and a broken heart. Carter Braxton of Virginia lost all his ships, sold his home to pay his debts, and died in rags. And so it was with Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Rutledge, Morris, Livingston and Middleton. Nelson personally urged Washington to fire on his home and destroy it when it became the headquarters for General Cornwallis. Nelson died bankrupt. But they sired a nation that grew from sea to shining sea. Five million farms, quiet villages, cities that never sleep, three million square miles of forest, field, mountain and desert, 227 million people with a pedigree that includes the bloodlines of all the world. In recent years, however, I've come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation. It also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history. Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government. Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should. Happy Fourth of July. --Ronald Reagan, President of the United States (1981) (Federalist)Editor's Note: The day after this Independence Day (providentially, we believe), July 5th, marks the end of the month of official mourning for Ronald Reagan's death -- with flags returning to full staff. Posted by SlagleRock at 12:00 AM | Comments (1) July 03, 2004Questions Remain on Captured Marine (Wassef Ali Hassoun Part 4)Straight from FoxNews.com Questions Remain on Captured Marine SALT LAKE CITY — A Marine spokeswoman sent here to provide support to the family of missing Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun provided few answers why the military officially changed its classification of his disappearance to being abducted Tuesday. Capt. Amy Malugani, a Marine Corps spokeswoman, instead deferred questions to either Marine Corps headquarters or Department of Defense officials during a late Tuesday evening media briefing at Fort Douglas. She specifically refused to answer why the military changed Hassoun's status from "missing" to "captured" on Tuesday, and also referred questions to officials in Washington, D.C., about a report saying Hassoun was captured while trying to defect. The New York Times, citing a Marine officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reported on its Web site Tuesday night that Hassoun had been traumatized after seeing one of his sergeants killed by a mortar, and was trying to make his way back to Lebanon. The officer told the paper that Hassoun sought the help of Iraqis on the base, was betrayed by them, and was handed over to the extremists. Hassoun's eldest brother, Mohammad, who lives in a Salt Lake City suburb, denied the report in an interview with The Associated Press. "To me it has no foundation. It's all wrong," Mohammad Hassoun said Tuesday night. "The circumstances surrounding his absence are still under investigation," she said when asked how a Marine is lured away from his unit. A military commander in Iraq had previously said Hassoun went "on an unauthorized absence" June 19 and did not report for duty the next day. Officials said based on his personal situation, there was reason to suspect he was headed to Lebanon. Hassoun, 24 and of Lebanese descent, is apparently being held hostage in Iraq by a militant group which is threatening to behead him if the U.S. military does not release all prisoners in Iraq. Malugani also would not answer questions about what measures the Marines were taking to try to rescue Hassoun of if any steps are being taken to meet the demands of those who took him hostage. Malugani said she was simply sent to Salt Lake City to provide support to Hassoun's family. "As a Marine Corps we take care of our Marines," she said. "That means taking care of their families." Hassoun's family in Salt Lake City continue to pray, and asked the same of the rest of the world, said their spokesman, Tarek Nosseir. The capture "is what has been destined upon us, and we accept it," he said. Three Marine Corps representatives visited privately with the Hassoun family in West Jordan on Tuesday, the same day American military officials declared he had been abducted. If the Marine Corps have stated that Hassoun was attempting to desert and it is untrue, I hope a public apology is coming. As for the terrorist ass holes that are claiming they killed Cpl. Hassoun, they want the credit they should have it. The Marine Corps needs to come down on this group of terrorist with a wrath the world has never seen. They should systematically annihilate every last person who associates themselves with this group. SlagleRock Out!

The first is a look at bureaucracy and how it stands in the way of procuring the things we need in the field. The second is a story about reactivating retired and separated troops to assist with the war on terror. Army to Call Up Retired and Discharged Troops Thanks Jack, the links are appreciated. Brando was one of Hollywood’s greats and he will be missed. Most remember him as the Godfather. The some remember him from a Streetcar Named Desire, and the younger crowds may remember him as Superman’s Father. He was a truly high impact actor. When his movies were a hit, they were a huge hit! He is another great American that is lost this year 2004. "I was shocked and deeply saddened at the loss of the greatest acting genius of our time. What will we do without Marlon in this world?" said his "Godfather" co-star Al Pacino, one of the generation of stars influenced by his work. According to the UK Mirror TERROR suspect Abu Hamza has a personal nurse at his call. Hamza, the former preacher at Finsbury Park mosque, North London, is said to have lost both hands and an eye in a bomb blast in Afghanistan. Now we see why he has a personal nurse. The man can't wipe his own "arse" since losing them most likely in a terror plot or combat with the US while in Afghanistan. You have got to be kidding me. Now, there is no doubt that the UK is our greatest ally, not only in the war on terror, but in general. However, the fact that they would pay a male nurse 30,000 pounds a year to wipe a terrorists ass is appalling. I say let Hamza do it himself. He'd either figure out how to get by with his hooks or he'd kill himself. If he could do it on his own, British taxpayers wouldn't be paying for the human ass wiper, "Dirty Harry". Better yet if he hurt himself, or caused an infection there would be one less terrorist ass hole, pun intended! SlagleRock Out! He has reached the mandatory retirement age for his rank. His career spanned 44 years and included nearly 6 years of captivity in the Hoa Lo prison in North Vietnam also known as the "Hanoi Hilton". Gen. Mechenbier was taken captive when his fighter jet was shot down over North Vietnam in June 1967 during his 80th mission. To mark the end of this great mans career one of his co-workers suggested that he pilot the "Hanoi Taxi" for his last mission. The "taxi" is a C-141 cargo plane. It is also the very same plane that brought General Mechenbier home on February 12, 1973. U.S. Air Force Reserve Maj. Gen. Edward J. Mechenbier, 61, points to an emblem on the side of the Hanoi Taxi, a military C-141 cargo plane, prior to a formal handover ceremony of remains of American servicemen missing in action from the Vietnam War, at Hanoi's Noi Bai airport, on Friday. After more than four decades of service this great man will surely be missed. General Mechenbier is the last Vietnam era P.O.W. still in the service. He also says he is the oldest active pilot in the military. U.S. Air Force Reserve Maj. Gen. Edward J. Wassef Ali Hassoun for reference to this story. Perhaps this Marine was scared, but not a deserter. Well, the rumors seem to be as a result of a prejudicial item in the New York Times which includes quotes taken out of context and incomplete quotes. A correction has been issued by the Times, for all the good that does to this man's reputation and safety. Not to mention that of his family. His poor mother has begun her mourning period, convinced that he is dead, and the Times has the nerve to publish false statements about him. Sick, arrogant bastards.
